Happy New Year! This is the first post in 2020 and we are going to be talking about those new year resolutions you made on January 1st, 2020. How are you faring with those new year resolutions and set goals? Is the motivation already wearing off? Not to worry, you are not alone on this boat. Setting goals isn’t the problem, achieving it is. Setting goals for yourself is the right thing to do but don’t just set goals, be consistent and persistent. During the initial days of setting a goal, there is a lot of enthusiasm and motivation. Give it a few weeks and the motivation wears off. If this is you, then what you need is a plan to help you stick to your set goals and resolutions. A goal without a plan is just a wish. If you have had challenges with goal setting, follow these steps to setting and achieving personal goals this year.
First things first, set that goal. What do you want to achieve this year? A new year is a fresh start for the realization of dreams. It motivates you to start something new, something different. The first step to achieving your personal goals is to brainstorm and select goals that lead to the success of your dreams and aspirations. When setting goals, ruminate on the important and significant areas of your life such as; Family, Career, Finances, Health, etc.
These mini-goals should be in line with your ultimate goals. Progressively smaller goals would help you reach your big goals by helping you work towards them. An effective strategy to achieving your goals is to break it down into smaller tasks and to-dos. Set daily objectives by creating a to-do-list of tasks that should be completed daily to reach your goal. Then go on to set weekly goals and monthly goals.
Now that you’ve set mini goals and you have a daily to-do-list. The next step is to prioritize. If you have a lot of tasks on your list, start from the important ones. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed by having too many tasks/goals.
Achieving goals require action. Writing your goals is an important aspect of setting and achieving your goals. Take a pen and paper and write your goals down. Don’t just say it, don’t just say put it in your ‘notes’ app. Put it down in black and white. You can take a step further by pasting them where you can see them regularly such as your bedroom, workstations, bathroom mirror, fridge as a reminder. For each task and goal completed, cross it out. This would give a sense of accomplishment, motivating you to keep going. Writing down your goals is a great tracking system.
Don’t compare yourself or achievements to other people. I know it’s easier said than done. Comparison is the thief of joy. All it does is to keep you focused on the negatives and what you don’t like about your life. Everyone’s story is unique and our paths are different. Follow your path, use your goals to find fulfillment. Don’t let other people set your bar.
It’s okay to keep your eye on the prize but don’t allow that to keep you from enjoying the process. Celebrate the small wins. When you’ve achieved a goal, enjoy the satisfaction by rewarding yourself appropriately. Because you deserve.
A useful way of setting and achieving personal goals is to use the SMART mnemonic. It’s a familiar acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-sensitive.
I hope you found this helpful. Let’s smash those goals this year. If you enjoyed reading this, we have more for you here. Follow our feed on Instagram:
